I have Scottish, Welsh, English, Swedish and Maori ancestry. 

To claim Maori ancestry is both to make a legal statement: -- that one is eligible to vote for a Maori parliamentary seat  -- and to make a cultural claim (to claim to be Maori one must be able to trace, and state, one's ancestry). My family whakapapa to the iwi (tribe) Kai Tahu: (Ngai Tahu, Rapuwai, Kati Mamoe, Waitaha).
